Sustainability Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award: Tone Wheeler
BlueScope congratulates Tone Wheeler of environa studio who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2021 Architecture & Design Sustainability Awards. Over his career, Tone has shown exemplary effort in advancing the progression of the sustainable built environment in Australia.
The Sustainability Awards is Australia’s longest-running awards program dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating excellence in sustainable design and architecture. This year the awards were announced at a Digital Gala following the Sustainability Summit virtual day event. BlueScope was a proud sponsor of the Lifetime Achievement Award Category.
Tone Wheeler has been a pioneer of sustainability in Australian architecture for five decades. He’s been at the forefront of R&D around new technologies, design methodologies, policies and resources, and construction materials that we now take for granted.
Over the course of his career, Tone’s wide-reaching and generous contribution has been influential across many fields of endeavour including education, research, advocacy, community engagement, policy development and leadership.
Tone founded environa studio in 1986, and through his practice he has consistently demonstrated leadership around sustainability. As well as designing and delivering private homes, environa has delivered project homes, retirement communities, a major sustainability overhaul of Kings Cross’ beloved Wayside Chapel (pro bono), new boarding houses, multi-res apartment developments and industrial buildings.
Phillipa Stone, BlueScope’s Sustainability Manager for Australian Steel Markets, said, “this award recognises Tone’s commitment and contribution to Sustainability in the Built Environment for over 50 years”. Through his efforts, he has inspired progress and supported clients, collaborators, and the general public to invest in and place value on the creation of built environments that elevate social and environmental aspirations.
